MIAMI, United States. – This Tuesday, the Cuban activist Adelth Bonne Gamboa posted photos of the singer-songwriter Fernando Bécquer walking through Vedado, in Havana. Just a week ago, the troubadour was sentenced to five years of subsidized deprivation of liberty for limitation of liberty for the crime of lascivious abuse.
“Today the pig of Bécquer, abuser of more than 30 women and sentenced (according to the dictatorship) to five years in house arrest, walks through the streets of Vedado as if nothing had happened…”, wrote Bonne Gamboa.
“This is the ‘revolutionary justice’ that the FMC refers to. If you see him on the street, don’t sit idly by, he’s a criminal on the loose with the complicity of the Cuban dictatorship,” he added.
Bécquer was sanctioned to five years of correctional work without commitment after a trial preceded by the demands of 30 women, who accused the troubadour of sexually abusing them, in some cases reaching penetration.
The platform Yo SíTeCreo in Cuba, a defender of women’s rights on the island, described as “shameful” the sentence issued by the judicial authorities against the troubadour Fernando Bécquer, accused of sexual abuse.
“The sentence of five years of limited freedom for the troubadour Fernando Bécquer, who was found guilty of lewd abuse by a court in Havana, is a shame for any current justice system. And to that is added that the state media have said nothing about the case nor has this problem been pointed out outside the Internet, ”says a statement issued by the organization after the punishment of the official singer was revealed via social networks and independent media.
Although “this sentence does not repair its victims”, the platform maintained that they “at least can now close this long cycle of re-victimization, cyberbullying and trial delay”.
The sentence —says Yo SíTeCreo in Cuba— “does not contain a sexual predator nor does it protect potential future victims. It does send a message of permissiveness from the Cuban State towards lewd abuse and even of minors.”
“The limitation of liberty as a subsidiary sanction of the deprivation of liberty, is excessively benign, to the point of contemplating the possibility of canceling the criminal record once it has been completed. And this has been happening for years in cases of lewd abuse even against children and adolescents, under the silence of this dysfunctional institutionality. Shame, a thousand times ashamed”, concludes the organization.
