To the Cuban singer Francisco pancho Céspedes, who starred in a controversy almost two weeks ago in Mexico for saying “I hope he dies”, referring to Andrés Manuel López Obrador, his concert, scheduled for July 7, at the Ángela Peralta Theater in San Miguel de Allende. The municipal president of that town in the state of Guanajuato, Mauricio Trejo Pureco, declared that in his city “there is freedom of expression and a lot of tolerance,” but “no one can come to wish our president dead.”
Trejo Pureco made the decision despite the fact that both ticket sales and promotional announcements were already underway. Through a video uploaded to his Facebook account, the councilor argued that a journalist had shown him the images – more than ten days after they took place – in which the Cuban singer was upset with López Obrador for inviting the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, to the celebrations of the bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico in September 2021.
“In other words, you can invite any president, but not put him as the maximum, because that’s why I don’t like that guy very much and I hope he dies,” said the singer-songwriter of Crazy life.
“Freedom of expression ends when someone wishes the death of our president,” he insisted. “Especially if he is a foreigner.”
In exchange, the municipal president promised to hire an artist of “greater relevance.” Through social networks this Thursday it was reported that the chosen singer is Eugenia León, who has offered concerts at various recitals at López Obrador’s conferences, and that she even performed a song written by the president’s wife, Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller. The most recent of these concerts was on May 10 for the celebration of Mother’s Day.
Those who bought tickets for Céspedes will have their tickets respected, they also reported. Otherwise, from Thursday until July 7, they can demand their refund at the theater box office.
Trejo Pureco insisted that his decision had nothing to do with politics: “This is about civility, just as we defend our country’s flag, we have to defend these types of issues.”
In social networks, reference is made to the fact that the cancellation is due to revenge. Former deputy Fernando Belaunzarán, from the Party of the Democratic Revolution, used his twitter account to ensure that Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller “intervened with the municipal president Mauricio Trejo to cancel the concert” by Pancho Céspedes.
This municipal president is the same one who ordered the removal of women merchants from the center of the city for being “ dark, short and uglyAfter the affected women themselves exposed the arbitrariness of the eviction despite having permits, they were relocated.
