MIAMI, United States. – The Center for a Free Cuba summoned to demonstrate this May 11, at 6:00 p.m., in front of the embassy of the Cuban regime in Washington DC to demand the release of the island’s political prisoners, including the five imprisoned youths for demonstrating in Caimanera on May 6.
According to the NGO Prisoners Defenders (PD), until April 30, the island’s regime kept 1,048 people in prison for political reasons. During the month of March, 24 new political prisoners were registered, according to the organization in its monthly report.
Of these 1,048 political prisoners, 784 are convicted of conscience; 234 convicted of conscience; and 30 other political prisoners.
On the other hand, Prisoners Defenders specified that 204 protesters against the island’s regime have been accused of sedition, and at least 202 have already been sentenced to an average of 10 years in prison each.
In April, 42 political prisoners were released, “the majority after full compliance with the sanction imposed, but also a dozen after verifying, thanks to the receipt of some new sentences and procedural documentation, that the criminal proceedings against them were exchanged for a sanction economic”.
In its latest monthly report, Prisoners Defenders also denounced that political prisoners in Cuba suffered judicial sentences or orders to limit their liberty by prosecutors without any judicial supervision or legal defense, in flagrant violation of international law that protects due process and effective defense.
