They ask the new president of Costa Rica to influence the democratization of Nicaragua

At least 20 opposition organizations in Nicaragua have requested to the elected president of Costa RicaRodrigo Chaves, advocate with the government of Daniel Ortega so that “democracy is restored” in the Central American country, but also that his agenda include efforts for the release of more than 50 political prisoners.

Chaves, who has stated that he would send a diplomat to Managua to put an end to the ice that existed in relations between neighboring countries, was elected in the Costa Rican elections on April 3 with 52% of the votes; although with a significant level of abstention, of 42.23%.

Among the signatory organizations is the civic alliance, one of the most important opposition blocs in Nicaragua that participated in the two failed dialogues that have taken place after the crisis that began in 2018.

The letter, released this Wednesday, was sent on April 6 to the president-elect of Costa Rica. The opponents state that they are convinced that Chaves “will contribute to the promotion of democracy, the maintenance of peace and solidarity,” for which they also asked to consider with “special attention the Nicaraguan community that has had to move from the country of by force and that at this moment he is in Costa Rica.”

According to recent UNHCR data, some 150,000 Nicaraguans have arrived in Costa Rican territory, a figure that is equivalent to 3% of the population of Costa Rica.

Rodrigo Chaves, 60, is an economist who won the second round in Costa Rica on April 3 through the Social Democratic Progress Party (PPSD).

The Nicaraguan exile community has asked the new president for more belligerent measures to pressure the Ortega government. To this is added the recent letter, however another block has criticized his decision to send a diplomat and has expressed that it would mean “an endorsement of the dictatorship.”
