The Argentine Society of Obesity Surgery (SACO) launched a campaign for gastronomic establishments throughout the country to offer the “bariatric portion”, that is, the possibility of choosing half of each of their dishes to accompany and facilitate the change of habits in a growing number of operated people.
The initiative resulted in a project submitted to the Deliberative Council of Rosario that aspires to be national in scopeand also in a petition from the signature collection platform Change.orgwhich has already gathered more than three thousand signatures.
“About 12,000 people undergo metabolic-bariatric surgery each year in Argentina for the treatment of diseases such as obesity, diabetes and other derived metabolic disorders”, said SACO in a statement.
They added that “estimates indicate that this number of people operated on will increase, since the evidence places metabolic-bariatric surgery as the most effective treatment for obesity, a disease whose incidence has grown by 74% in the last seven years.” .
If the proposal materializes, the gastronomic establishment must offer the option of a half portion of all the dishes offered on its menu at an appropriate price, which will be aimed at people who are preparing for metabolic-bariatric surgery or who have recently undergone it.
“The realization of this project involves the empowerment of people with metabolic-bariatric surgeries to take control of their own diet, in the ease of choosing an adequate portion in quantity and quality”, the authors underlined in the foundations of the initiative. Rosario.
They emphasized that “the objective is not to devise a different menu, but rather to offer the possibility of acquiring it in smaller volume, taking into account that its intake capacity is reduced and, in this way, avoid waste and unnecessary expense.”
In the justification for the project, SACO also emphasizes the sustained increase in bariatric procedures in the last 15 years due to its proven effectiveness for the treatment of morbid and severe obesity, and grade II obesity with associated diseases, both in our country as in the world.

“This favorable evolution of metabolic-bariatric surgeries has been accompanied by new technological developments and progress in surgical techniques. This allows the patient to eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods, restrict volumes and, fundamentally, provide a feeling of satiety”, they detail.
By allowing patients to choose a “bariatric portion” from the menu, good gastric tolerance, less waste and economic savings are ensured.
“Metabolic-bariatric surgery is a tool that will be used more and more, so the project not only seeks to care for those who have already undergone surgery, but also for the large number of people who will undergo this kind of surgical procedure in the coming years. years”, summarized Dr. Jorge Harraca, president of SACO.
