They ask for the opening of the bridge that connects the Dajabón border market with the Juana Méndez market

Haitian and Dominican merchants asked the government of the Dominican Republic to open the footbridge, which is a bridge that connects the markets of Juana Méndez and Dajabón, and which seeks to speed up and relieve congestion during bilateral trade exchanges.

The CEO of Kardisa Distribuidora, Héctor Kildere Taveras, told Listín Diario that he supports the request of businessmen from both countries to reopen the walkway, which was temporarily open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There will be greater fluidity, there will be better organization and it will be possible to move around more easily and that will make everything easier, always taking into account security measures,” said Kilderes Taveras regarding the opening of the bridge.

The border mayor for Dajabón, Santiago Riveron, said that it was agreed that the walkway will open on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday, but that they are still waiting for the authorities to officially open the walkway.

Regarding the operation of the new Juana Méndez market, Mayor Santiago Riveron insists that there is no security for Dominicans on the Haitian side at the moment.

A source linked to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs told Listín Diario that the walkway will be opened at some point and that there will be a trial period and if everything goes smoothly it will be opened permanently.

A commission headed by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, Víctor Bisonó, visited the Dajabón border market on Friday and supervised the closure of the planned gateway, as well as the commercial exchange between Haitians and Dominicans.

“It is at their request that we have come to see how to enable the walkway that was open during the COVID pandemic and worked well. The goal would be to see how we enable, facilitate and accommodate the market to flow better as it is happening,” Ito Bisonó told the press.
