They arrest the opponent Guillermo ‘Coco’ Fariñas in Villa Clara

Guillermo 'Coco' Fariñas Hernández

HAVANA, Cuba. – Cuban opponent Guillermo Coconut Fariñas Hernández was detained by State Security officials on Thursday morning outside the Guamajal prison, province of Villa Clara, according to what he reported to CubaNet Tayrí Lorenzo Prado, mother of the political prisoner Andy Garcia Lorenzo.

“They took him away in a State Security car. Please report it because I almost have no coverage,” Lorenzo Prado asked this media via telephone before losing the connection.

Likewise, he explained that the leader of the United Antitotalitarian Forum (FANTU) and Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Conscience (2010) had gone to show solidarity with her and her husband, who had been in prison early to get news about their son.

Andy García Lorenzo celebrates 15 days on hunger strike this Thursday. The 27-year-old demands the return of his family correspondence, stolen by his jailers several months ago.

His relatives were notified of the strike on Thursday, December 5, when they came to visit him. After seeing it, the mother described his condition: “I saw it bad. His eyes were sunken, with black circles under his eyes, extremely thin… He was short of breath when speaking; “He tried to do it, but he had to speak very slowly because he no longer has the strength.”

Since then, and although he travels daily to the Guamajal prison to demand news about him, Lorenzo Prado has not been able to see him again. They have only informed him that they are keeping him isolated and that his medical condition is stable.

“Yesterday [miércoles] His blood sugar was low and they had to give him a dextrose solution,” the mother explained.

This week, Lorenzo Prado hung posters in the windows of his home in Santa Clara that say “Freedom for my son” and “I want him alive.” The family is even more alarmed because during his previous hunger strike the young man was beaten and subjected to inhumane conditions.

This December 10, International Human Rights Day, Lorenzo Prado reported having State Security surveillance around his home. They allowed her to leave but, as she explained, they followed her “everywhere.”

“They have not even given him a medical examination. “Do not play with my son’s life, every minute, every second counts,” express to CubaNet. “We are not going to be silent. Freedom for Andy,” he added.

Andy Garcia Lorenzo He is serving a four-year prison sentence for participating in the protests of July 11, 2021 (11J), a sanction that expires in the middle of next year. However, since October 2023 he has been in isolation cell, at his own request because, according to his mother, he wants to prevent State Security from fabricating a common crime to keep him in prison.
