San Juan- The US Coast Guard delivered this Wednesday to 76 Dominicans who were intercepted the day before when they tried to arrive illegally in three boats to Puerto Rico.
To this illegal trip3 Venezuelans joined.
The migrants were delivered by patrolman Joseph Napier to a Dominican Republic Navy ship off Punta Cana, according to the Coast Guard statement.
The first of the intercepted vessels was detected by a Customs and Border Protection multirole aircraft approximately 80 nautical miles northwest of the Puerto Rican town of Aguadilla.
Hours later, and also northwest of the coast of Aguadilla, two other suspicious boats were sighted and they were arrested, the coast guard said.
Between October 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022, the Coast Guard carried out 72 interdictions in the so-called Mona Passage, which separates the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
During that time, the authorities detained 1,919 people, of whom 1,414 were Dominicans, 404 Haitians and 52 Venezuelans, among others.
