Morelia, Mich., Federal and state authorities yesterday detained seven bodyguards of the independent mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, murdered on November 1, reported the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
He explained that the arrest warrant was executed against the public servants of the municipality “for their probable participation in the crime of qualified homicide, in commission by omission, to the detriment” of the mayor.
Manzo Rodríguez’s bodyguards were captured by agents from the Secretariat of the Navy, the Mexican Army and the FGE around 12:30 pm yesterday in the facilities of the House of Culture of the Uruapan city council, in the central area, a place that Manzo Rodríguez used as the offices of the municipal presidency.
According to the state prosecutor’s office, those arrested were identified as Omar, 47 years old, originally from the state of Mexico; Alejandro, 21, from Uruapan; Mario Alberto, 45, of Mexico City; Guillermo, 43 years old, from Puebla; Demetrio, 44, from Hidalgo; Omar Osvaldo, 56 years old, originally from Veracruz and Montserrat, 23 years old, from Guerrero.
All were transferred to the “Lic. David Franco Rodríguez” Penitentiary Center and will be placed at the disposal of the Control Judge.
During the morning conference on November 2, one day after the crime, the Secretary of Defense, Ricardo Trevilla, said that Manzo was choosing his first circle of protection.
“Immediate security was provided by municipal police personnel, who were his trust; he determined so. And the elements of the National Guard were dedicated to providing peripheral security,” he mentioned.
The bodyguards are investigated after Víctor Manuel Ubaldo Vidales, 17, who murdered Manzo Rodríguez in the main square of Uruapan during the Day of the Dead celebration, was killed by security elements even though he had already been disarmed and subdued.
