Bill 475, which seeks to prevent, eradicate and punish the mistreatment of domestic animals, was unanimously approved this afternoon, as it received 39 votes from the deputies present in plenary,
This project, which modifies Law 70 of October 12, 2012, on the protection of domestic animals, the Penal Code and dictates other provisions, empowers justices of the peace to provisionally order the inspection of places where one or more pets have been mistreated.
With this legal initiative, the penalties for people who cause death or seriously injure animals are toughened, since they can pay up to six years in prison.
Depending on the aggravating circumstances, the sentence could be increased up to two thirds of the sentence. Some aggravating circumstances are that the animal is in a state of pregnancy, that the death of an animal is the product of rituals, that the death is provoked with treachery, among others.
But the project does not stop there because in addition to prison, those who mistreat their pets may be sanctioned with fines of up to $2,000.
