Former police officer Julio René Navia Gorena was apprehended this Wednesday in the capital of Santa Cruz, when he went to the offices of the General Personal Identification Service (Segip) to renew a forged identity card which I used since 2017.
According to official information, to which EL DEBER agreed, the former lieutenant went to the Segip on Tuesday, July 18, to update his original identity document and, the next day, with his appearance changed, he tried to evade the controls when wanting to renew his falsified name, which corresponded to Sebastián Áñez Ruiz.
When the procedure was being carried out, the biometric equipment, the fingerprint and facial camera jumped immediately to indicate that the identity was incorrect, since the fingerprint showed that it was Julio Navia.
Alpacino Mojica, regional director of Segip, informed EL DEBER that, after this movement was detected, he was alerted by the officials and agents of the Special Force to Fight Crime (Felcc) were called to file the complaint. These, upon learning of the fact, went to the Segip offices to arrest the subject, known in the media.
This State institution filed the complaint against the former lieutenant for the alleged crime of material and ideological falsehood, and use of a counterfeit instrumentwhich was accepted by the Prosecutor’s Office, when found in flagrante delicto.
Mojica asked that the defendant is sent, in a preventive manner, to the Palmasola prisonfor the aforementioned crimes. The hearing is expected to be installed this Friday.
In 2022 Navia, along with five other people, were prosecuted for the crime of legitimization of illicit profits, linked to drug trafficking. The former police officer was arrested in 2010, when the so-called “Navia clan” was disrupted, in which drug traffickers, members of the Colombian Norte del Valle cartel, hitmen and former police officers were involved.
In 2010, Julio René Navia and his father, Arturo Navia, were arrested for alleged drug trafficking and illicit enrichment. In 2014 they regained their freedom through substitute measures.
At that time, and at only 26 years old, Navia Gorena reported exorbitant movements of money in her bank accounts, up to one and a half million dollars. This amount could not justify only with her income. In the investigation it was learned that, in his short police career, he held the position of head of the Felcn airport in Viru Viru.
In January 2011, Julio René Navia was peppered with a double crime, in the middle of a public thoroughfare, which affected the Soria-Áñez spouses, who were his in-laws, and were riddled with bullets by hit men, who were riding a motorcycle, in the 4th ring of the highway to Cotoca.
In April 2020, he was arrested with a police ID, despite being discharged from the olive green institution and with a false circulation pass during confinement due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
While, in 2021, he was apprehended by Diprove for having a vehicle reported stolen in his possession.
