A claim of unconstitutionality, against the ruling of the Electoral Court that would maintain criminal jurisdiction against former President Ricardo Martinelli, was admitted this afternoon by the Judicial Branch.

The lawsuit, filed by Lawyer Héctor Herrera, qualifies the decision of the TE, which prevents Martinelli from being tried for the New Business and Odebrecht scandals, as unconstitutional.

The Magistrate Rapporteur in this legal process is the current president of the Supreme Court, María Eugenia López Arias.

Today members of the Citizen Forum for Electoral Reforms, and other civic organizations, once again spoke out against the ruling of two TE Magistrates, as they assured that the electoral criminal jurisdiction only “serves as a shield for candidates and elected authorities to prevent them from doing in front of justice”, for which they demand that this figure be eliminated.
