Why was the contingency activated in the Valley of Mexico?
The environmental contingency was activated after ozone levels exceeded the limits established to protect health. At 4:00 p.m., authorities recorded a maximum concentration of 160 parts per billion (ppb) of ozone at the Cuajimalpa station (CUA), located in the Cuajimalpa mayor’s office, in Mexico City.
This level exceeded the threshold that requires activating Phase 1 of environmental contingency, in accordance with the current programs for the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico.
The weather conditions directly influenced this episode. A high pressure system remained over the center of the country, causing little wind and poor ventilation, preventing pollutants from dispersing. In addition, a maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius was recorded, a high value for this time of year, which favors the formation and accumulation of ozone.
Faced with this scenario, the Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis activated the contingency with the objective of reducing the population’s exposure to contaminated air, reducing health risks and applying measures to reduce the emission of pollutants in the region.
