They activate a new air link between Havana and the tourist hub north of Holguín

a new air connection was recently established between Havana and the tourist pole in the north of eastern Cuba, until Holguinwith the purpose of promoting the arrival of foreign visitors and offering another alternative to national customers.

The route links the José Martí airport, in the Cuban capital, with the Frank País air terminals, in Holguín, and those of Jardines del Rey and Cayo Coco, according to a report of the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

It is expected that the itinerary will help strengthen the link between several of the tourist enclaves in the western and eastern areas of the country, and with it the gradual recovery of one of the fundamental sectors for the economy. He adds that the airlift will have two frequencies on Sundays.

The first flight will depart in the morning from Havana to the Holguin airfield, from where the journey will continue to the resorts of the northern keys.

The same aircraft would complete the route in reverse in the afternoon, according to Reinaldo Pavón Pérez, head of the Ground Operations Unit at the Holguín air terminal.

Tickets to cover the route are currently sold by the Havanatur travel agency – focused mainly on tourist excursions – but national passengers can also access the service by purchasing at the tour operator’s reservation bureaus.

It highlights how this initiative is essential to diversify the offer to foreign visitors, expand internal transportation alternatives, reduce transfer times and facilitate the design of combined tourist packages.

The Holguín airport maintains the operation of two weekly frequencies of regular domestic flights, along with the new connection designed for the high tourism season, which has generated an increase in the number of flights compared to the previous year.

The recovery of tourism It is one of the priorities of the Cuban Government, but it remains a pending issue in the midst of the deep and prolonged economic crisis that the country is experiencing, to which is added the upheaval caused by the capture of Nicolás Madura, a fundamental ally of the Cuban Government.

Data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) indicates that between the months of January and November 2025, 19% fewer visitors arrived on the island compared to the similar period of the previous year.

Until November, Cuba received about 19% fewer tourists than in the same period in 2024

Although the official figures for the end of last year are not yet public, the sector authorities place them at around 1.9 million tourists, far from the 2.6 initially projected.

Cuba received 2.2 million international visitors in 2024, a total of 2.4 million in 2023 and 1.6 million in 2022, according to official data that reflects the highest peak of 4.6 reached in 2018, and 4.2 the following year.
