The project of Train Alameda-Melipilla has taken a decisive step towards its completion with the recent tender for underground works. This section, which runs from Estación Central to Lo Errázuriz in Cerrillos, represents an investment of US$200 million and is one of the most important phases of the railway project.
The State Railway Company (EFE) has indicated that this work will not only improve connectivity in the Metropolitan Region, but will also be key to decongesting other public transport routes. The next stages of the project include the awarding of the sections that will connect Lo Errázuriz with Malloco, and from Malloco to Melipilla.
These works of trains The additional ones will have an investment of $785 million, and their completion will allow the completion of a 61-kilometer route that will benefit millions of people residing in the communes included in the route. The tender for these sections is in full process, with several offers already received, and the final award is expected to be made in November.
This project is not only one of the largest works that EFE has been carried out in recent years, but is also aligned with the expansion and modernization of public transportation in the Chilean capital. Eric Martin, president of EFE Trenes de Chile, has highlighted the importance of this project both to improve mobility and to offer a more efficient and less polluting transportation alternative. According to him, this work is a milestone in the recent history of EFE, and its impact will be comparable to that of the Batuco-Quinta Normal train.
eleven stations that are part of the route are designed to connect passengers with different Metro lines, facilitating intermodality and making the journey even more efficient. By reducing the travel time between Melipilla and Santiago to just 46 minutes, many passengers will be able to avoid regular highway traffic.
