These are the most important news of September 3, 2024

The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) continues to “nosedive” according to data from the latest CID Gallup poll, which states that the party of Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega has only 12% support among the population in 2024. In 2016, according to the same firm, the party had 54% support, which dropped to 23% in 2019 and in September 2021 it reached 8%.

The telephone survey, conducted last May, asked Nicaraguans: “What is your favorite political party?” Eighty percent said none, and only 12% said the Sandinista Front and 8% said other parties. In 2023, the Ortega government was disapproved of by 56% of Nicaraguans, and only 16% expressed sympathy for the FSLN party.

The pollster’s data confirms the discontent of Nicaraguan citizens with a rejection of the Sandinista government during the last three years, with the highest negative peaks in 2022 and 2023 with 58% and 57% respectively. In the same survey, Ortega went from 38% to 34% support in the country.

The replacement of the dictatorship and its heir is another issue addressed by the survey, revealing discontent among the population against a dynasty within Nicaragua and, on the contrary, rejecting the repressive form of government that violates fundamental human rights for Nicaraguans who do not support the Ortega-Murillo administration.

The Ortega-controlled Parliament approved the reform to the Law Against Money Laundering, Financing of Terrorism and Financing of the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (Law 977), which requires remittance agencies to provide information about their clients and beneficiaries in Nicaragua.

With 91 votes in favor, 0 against, and 0 abstentions, the Sandinista assembly approved the reform to Law 977 that authorizes the Financial Analysis Unit (UAF) to request personal information about Nicaraguans abroad who send remittances and their families (beneficiaries).

The initiative to reform the Law Against Money Laundering was presented by Deputy María Auxiliadora Martínez.

Sandinista deputy Carlos Emilio López stated during the plenary session that those who oppose the reform of Law 977 “do so because they launder money through companies, associations, societies, foundations or other types of commercial activities that are apparently legal but are in reality fronts.”

This modification to Law 976 ordered by the Ortega regime will also allow the creation of profiles of remittance senders and beneficiaries within Nicaragua, the expeditious freezing of money and the reporting to the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office of those whom the regime considers “suspicious.”

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recommends that the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo begin, from now on, a process of legal reforms in both electoral and penal matters, to guarantee free elections in 2026, with international observation and under international democratic standards as an opportunity to put an end to the political and social crisis that the country has been experiencing since 2018.

On September 9, OHCHR will present to the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC) the report on the human rights situation in Nicaragua, which covers the period from June 2023 to June 2024, and which denounces that the Managua regime continues to perpetrate serious violations of the fundamental rights of Nicaraguans.

Among the aspects highlighted in the report is the worsening of repression, which includes political and religious persecution, kidnappings, forced disappearances, imprisonment, exile, cruel torture and “extreme suffering” inflicted on opponents and their families, including children.
