Ortega's "Proof of Life" of Political Prisoners Evidences the Effects of Solitary Confinement and Isolation

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) ordered the State of Nicaragua to immediately release 45 political prisoners, held in eight detention centers.

The president of the Inter-American Court, Ricardo Pérez Manrique, read the resolution in an act broadcast on the internet; it welcomes the provisional measures requested by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in favor of a group of political prisoners from Nicaragua.

Beneficiaries include Jhon Cerna, Fanor Alejandro Ramos, Edward Lacayo, María Esperanza Sánchez, Karla Escobar, José Manuel Urbina Lara, Yubrank Suazo, Alex Hernández, Irving Larios, Róger Reyes, José Antonio Peraza, Evelyn Pinto and Eliseo de Jesús Castro. .

The Court demanded that, while the release procedures are being carried out, the State facilitate regular contact between the prisoners and their relatives and lawyers; as well as access to health services and medications, and eliminate checks that affect the privacy and dignity of visitors in prison.

However, this is not the first time that the Court has issued rulings in favor of those imprisoned in Nicaragua. In June, he also requested the release of nine political prisoners, including private company leaders Michael Healy and Álvaro Vargas; as well as peasant leaders Medardo Mairena and Pedro Mena.

He has also called for the release of former presidential hopefuls Cristiana Chamorro and Félix Maradiaga.

The justice of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has remained silent on the request made by the political prisoners of “El Nuevo Chipote” to see their minor children.

The inmates have insisted on having some type of communication with their children, but the dictatorship continues to subject them to isolation.

The desperation is such that the union leaders have declared a hunger strike to the end.

At the moment, the dictatorship has only allowed a meeting between the political prisoner Miguel Mendoza and his 22-year-old disabled son known as “Miguelito”; and between the political prisoner Tamara Dávila and her six-year-old daughter.

Both opponents had not seen their children for more than a year and had announced that they would deprive themselves of food in protest.

But, many more have not had the same opportunity, despite the number of legal appeals and verbal requests they have made to the authorities of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance.

Norma Aurora Lanzas Somoza, mother of former liberal deputy and now political prisoner María Fernanda Flores de Alemán, died Tuesday night at the age of 75.

Former Nicaraguan president Arnoldo Alemán denounced that the Nicaraguan authorities did not allow his wife to say goodbye to her mother. Nor did they authorize the mother of the former first lady to be veiled in any house or for a priest to appear at the scene.

Close to the family, they indicated that the relatives decided to cremate the body of Mrs. Norma Lanzas to keep the ashes together with those of her husband, who died the previous year.

Oppositionist Javier Álvarez Zamora denounced, from exile, that his wife, daughter and son-in-law, who face political trials, “have not committed any crime nor have they had any political participation, however, they have been unfairly imprisoned for the simple fact of being his relatives.”

Álvarez expressed through a letter that the imprisonment of his wife, Jeannine Horvilleur Cuadra, 63, his daughter Ana Álvarez Horvilleur, 43, and his son-in-law Félix Roiz responds to a new modality of the Nicaraguan regime that represents a “Very serious aggression and violation of the most basic human rights by transferring an alleged fault to their direct relatives.”

The opponent pointed out that his relatives have a delicate state of health and asked the international community to exert more pressure to achieve his freedom from his relatives.
