Meléndez, director of the organization Expediente Abierto, in an interview for the program In Contact, of Article 66, with the journalist Alvaro Navarrocalled on the opposition forces to encourage the defections of officials from the dictatorship and welcome them into the opposition so that they collaborate in the fight against the regime and accelerate its fall.

The analyst gives importance to the issue of desertions because he considers that the opposition in exile needs to know the inside of what is happening in the regime and in the main repressive institutions that support the dictators, which are the Police and the Army.
The expert maintains that within some opposition groups there is suspicion and rejection towards Sandinistas or officials who defect from the regime and flee, which makes it difficult to integrate them into fighting strategies and support complaints against dictators.
However, Meléndez analyzes that deserters, especially those at a high hierarchical level of the dictatorship, are very important, because they end up being or are “key agents to receive intelligence information, to update work strategies, to internally erode to the regime, to denounce,” says the expert and adds that “working with deserters could imply an opportunity to reinforce our denunciation,” but to do so, “a strategy of working with them must be consolidated.”
