The Organization of American States (OAS) “strongly” condemned the illegal entry into the facilities where the agency’s offices were located in Managua and the seizure of its assets executed by the Daniel Ortega regime on Sunday, April 24.
During a special session, 29 member countries approved a resolution that holds the Ortega government responsible for all breaches of its international legal obligations on the matter, and demanded that the use of the seized premises be immediately restored to the Organization.
The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, must transmit this resolution to the Nicaraguan authorities and to the heads of all international organizations with a presence in the country, as well as to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.
The illegitimate president, Daniel Ortega, was once again “alone” in the Organization of American States (OAS). El Salvador, Honduras and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines were the only countries that abstained in the vote this Friday; meanwhile, Nicaragua and Bolivia chose to absent themselves. No country agreed with Ortega’s attack against the organization, including Mexico and Argentina, which supported the resolution.

The National Assembly of Nicaragua, controlled by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega, will cancel another 25 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) more, according to an initiative of the Legislative Decree for the Cancellation of Legal Personalities presented by the Ortega deputy Filiberto Rodríguez, president of the Commission of Peace, Defense, Government and Human Rights of the Parliament.
The document is dated May 9 but the website of the National Assembly published the initiative until this Friday. The next plenary session of the Assembly is scheduled to be on Tuesday, May 17.
Between the NGOs that will be canceled There are the Meeting Points Foundation for the Transformation of Daily Life, the Full Life Association (Asovip), the Association for Accompanied Integral Development of Nicaragua and its Communities, the Foundation of Women for Development and Democracy of Nicaragua (Fumdenic) and the Institute Association of Studies for Governance and Democracy.
The opponents imprisoned in the Waswalí Penitentiary System, in the department of Matagalpa, have been beaten by the jailers and are under threat of being “disappeared” if they continue to claim rights, a source revealed to Article 66. The complainant explained that the inmates Misael Escorcia de Sébaco, Alcides Zeledón de Jinotega, Moisés Leiva de Matagalpa and the brothers Oliver and Dorling Montenegro were locked up in the so-called “dungeon”, they are sick and they have been denied medical care since the strike began of hunger for cruel treatment in prison.
In addition, it confirmed that the lawyer Manuel Urbina Lara was transferred to the Jorge Navarro National Penitentiary System, known as “La Modelo”, in the municipality of Tipitapa, department of Managua.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) demanded that the Nicaraguan authorities guarantee communication between the political prisoners and their families, in accordance with the Principles and Good Practices on the Protection of Persons Deprived of Liberty. The agency indicated that the permanent refusal of the authorities “disproportionately affects young girls and boys, who have not had communication for more than six months with their mothers or fathers, for which they would suffer psychological and emotional effects.”
He reiterated that the State has the obligation to facilitate contact between detainees and their families, as well as to respect fundamental rights against any abusive and arbitrary interference. In addition, family visits must be carried out at least with the frequency indicated by the Penitentiary Regulations and in decent conditions that are in no way degrading.
The basic basket reached a record price by suffering an increase of almost 6% in April. According to data from National Institute of Development Information (Inide), the cost of the basic basket exceeded 17,200 cordobas, equivalent to about 485 dollars. The data shows that, in four months, Nicaraguans must pay more than 900 córdobas or 27 dollars if they want to purchase the 53 products.
