Among the most recurrent violations of religious freedom, documented by GHREN, are threats, harassment, physical attacks, arbitrary detention, violations of the right to due process and a fair trial, arbitrary deprivation of nationality of at least 22 religious figures, and violations of the right to freedom of movement.

Research reveals that the Nicaraguan dictatorshipBetween April 2018 and March 2024, the UN carried out 73 arbitrary arrests of members of the Catholic Church and other Christian religions, of which 69 were men and 4 were women.

“Among those arrested were priests, pastors and members of evangelical churches, seminarians, lay people who carried out journalistic and/or artistic work in defense of human rights in religious organizations and parishioners,” the report says.

In addition, several evangelical pastors were victims of harassment and intimidation by the Sandinista Police.
