The National Assembly, controlled by the ruling party, outlawed another 25 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)dedicated to press freedom, citizen participation, research, environmental protection, indigenous and women’s rights.

Among them, the March 8 Women’s Collective, Operation Smile, the Association of Journalists of Nicaragua; the environmentalist Humboldt Center and Ethics and Transparency.

They also canceled the Foundation for Freedom that was promoted by the political scientist Felix Maradiaga; the Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation, in charge of Christiana Chamorro, and Funides, directed, at the time, by Juan Sebastian Chamorro. All of them former presidential candidates and political prisoners.

The deputies and the Ministry of the Interior pointed out to the entities that they had carried out activities outside the law by not reporting their financial statements or verifying the identity of their fund providers and the good reputation of their beneficiaries.

The Ministry of the Interior it also canceled four organizations originating from abroad for not registering as foreign agentsaccording to the controversial rule of the regime, Law 1040.

Those banned are Green Clinic, originally from the United States, the Development Cooperation Fund (FOS) of Belgium, the Catholic Agency for International Development (CAFOD), originally from the United Kingdom, and the International Christian Service for Peace (EIRENE), originally from Germany. Some registered for 22 years.

The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) condemned the cancellation of the legal personality of the NGOs and demanded that the international community establish more rigorous measures against the Daniel Ortega regime, which it called “lacking sanity” for its “direct attack on the right to defend human rights.

For her part, Berta Valle, wife of political prisoner Félix Maradiaga, described the act as “absurd” for harming thousands of people who were part of the humanitarian programs.

Valle emphasized the situation of the children of Operación Sonrisa, an organization that benefited patients with cleft lip and cleft palate. Nicaraguan sociologist Elvira Cuadra stated that it is “total cruelty” to annul philanthropic organizations.

On the other hand, the Financial FDL informed its clients that there is no link with the Local Development Fund Association, an organization that was also outlawed this Thursday. In a statement, the financial institution indicated that FDL is supervised by the Superintendency of Banks (Siboif) and will continue to operate normally.
