A group of relatives of political prisoners held in “El Nuevo Chipote” made an urgent appeal on Tuesday to the State of Nicaragua to allow them to see their imprisoned relatives, of whom they have had no information for more than two months.

The families stated that they were “extremely concerned” at the absolute isolation of 81 days. They have made continuous oral requests to authorize visits and have inquired about the state of health and whereabouts of their relatives, but all have been denied by the authorities of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance.

The call was joined by relatives of people detained between September and November of this year who have been in uncertainty for more than 60 days. The regime does not report how the imprisoned citizens are, nor does it allow them access to food and medical care.

Human rights defenders have described the situation to which the more than 200 political prisoners in Nicaragua are subjected as torture. Therefore, the group of volunteers from the campaign called “Be Human”, based in Costa Rica, decided to expose to the international community the inhumane conditions and isolation in which the prisoners of the Daniel Ortega regime find themselves.

The members, with the support of the Costa Rican deputy Monserrat Ruiz of the Human Rights Commission, organized an exhibition in the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica. In the room, the photos of the prisoners are shown, visibly affected by the ill-treatment, messages from the detainees are also read and a “virtual” cell can be seen.

October marked a new record for Nicaraguans who crossed the border irregularly to enter the United States.

The Customs and Border Protection Office of the North American country recorded the detention of more than 20,900 Nicaraguans in that month, that is, more than 600 Nicaraguans arrived in the United States per day.

The figure represents an increase of 14 percent compared to September when the irregular entry of more than 18,000 Nicaraguans was reported.

In the first ten months of the year, more than 147,000 people decided to leave Nicaragua heading north. The media indicates that the immigration authorities of the United States recognize that “the meetings of Cuban and Nicaraguan asylum seekers fleeing their authoritarian regimes remain historically high, and this reflects the challenge that is gripping the region, as populations flee authoritarianism, corruption, violence and poverty.

The situation becomes evident in the long lines of compatriots who mainly seek to process their passport at the headquarters of the General Directorate of Migration and Aliens.

The regime decided that now they will only deal with applications for passports, renewals, visas and migratory movement certificates through a appointment that is requested online on the institution’s website. For now, the service is only enabled for the headquarters.

The Public Ministry filed a formal accusation against Mildred Rayo and Miguel Flores, members of the Nicaraguan University Alliance (AUN). The case against the activists was filed on November 11, ten days after they were arrested.

Although he does not specify what crimes he is accused of, the accusation states that the victims are the Nicaraguan State and society.

According to the AUN organization, the Nicaraguan Army kidnapped the two activists in the vicinity of the Sapoá River, in Cárdenas, in the department of Rivas, during a search carried out by the military institution, when the young people were moving towards Managua.
