Nicaragua heads the ranking of the countries with the highest impunity in Central America, according to the recent report of the so-called Atlas of Impunity, which analyzed the situation in at least 163 countries.

The investigation, carried out by a group of experts from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs with the support of the political risk consultancy Eurasia Group, explains that “impunity is the exercise of power without accountability, which becomes, in its more stark form, in the commission of crimes without punishment”.

Globally, Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen had the highest impunity scores; while Finland, Denmark and Sweden, lower. In Latin America, Venezuela is at the highest peak of impunity, occupying the 11th position in the world ranking. Behind the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro, is Haiti with a score of 15 and, in third place among countries with the highest impunity in Latin America is Nicaragua, with a score of 38.

The Ministry of the Interior on Friday canceled another 25 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), including the Association for the Promotion of Russian Language and Culture in Nicaragua.

The Ministry also outlawed the Alberto and Berta Chamorro Foundation, the SOS Guardians of Children Foundation (Fugdi), the Association of War Veterans of Carazo and Pensioners and Contributors of the Nicaraguan Social Security Regime, among others.

According to the Interior, the NGOs were in “abandonment.” With this argument, the regime has canceled more than three thousand organizations since 2018.

Government formalizes the cancellation of 100 NGOs between nationals and internationals

Nicaragua received 317 million dollars in remittances in the month of January, mainly from Nicaraguan migrants in the United States.

The Central Bank of Nicaragua indicated that 80% of the total was received from the North American country. Followed by Costa Rica and Spain, from where 8% and 7% were sent, respectively.

The bank pointed out that remittances in January of this year increased by more than 60% compared to those received in January 2022.

The increase in the money sent by migrants coincides with the number of Nicaraguans who have fled the sociopolitical and economic crisis, whose number has reached “unprecedented” levels.

The National Assembly authorized this Monday the Executive to manage a loan with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) for an amount of 150.55 million dollars to finance a program to clean up Lake Managua.

The Parliament authorized to modify the contract of that millionaire loan, signed on November 12, 2021, in relation to “interest, commissions and other charges”, however, this modification does not increase or decrease the total amount of the loan, according to the Legislative decree published in the Official Gazette, La Gaceta,

Opposition organizations have asked CABEI to condition and monitor disbursements to the Daniel Ortega regime.
