"There will not be a Palestinian state," repeats Netanyahu despite the resolution of the UN and international condemnation

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamín Netanyahu, categorically reiterated his rejection of the existence of a Palestinian state during the signing of a plan to build more than 3 thousand homes in the settlement of Maale Adumim, in occupied Bank.

In a speech marked by intransigence, Netanyahu said: “We said that there will not be a Palestinian state and, in fact, there will not be a Palestinian state. This place belongs to us.”

The expansion of the settlement, located in the controversial area E1 that connects Jerusalem is with Maale Adumim, will seek to double the local population and divide the Palestinian territory further.

This plan has been recently approved by the Israel Ministry of Defense and was signed in the presence of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. The measure, in addition to hindering the Palestinian territorial unity, has generated a strong international condemnation.

UN resolution, an ignored call

The UN General Assembly, meanwhile, adopted a resolution on Friday by supporting the New York Declaration, which seeks to revitalize the solution of two states: Palestine and Israel, and the disarmament of Hamas.

The text, promoted by France and Saudi Arabia, and supported by dozens of countries, obtained 142 votes in favor, ten against -between Israel, the United States and Argentina -, and twelve abstentions.

Since 2016, the United Nations Security Council also establishes that Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories, including Eastern Jerusalem, are illegal and constitute a flagrant violation of international law.

Despite this, Israel continues with its settlement expansion plans and its colonization policy, contravening international legal obligations.

A report by the UN Secretary General of January 2024 said that “settlement activities have continued”, which shows the lack of compliance with Israel.

Qatar and the sentence of the Security Council to Israeli attack in its territory

The tension in the region climbed after the recent Israeli attack in Doha, Qatar, against a delegation of Hamas, which caused the death of six people, including a Qatarí security officer.

Qatar’s prime minister, Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, expressed with concern that “Netanyahu killed any hope to free the hostages in Gaza”, referring to the interruption of the negotiations mediated by his country between Israel and Hamas to achieve a high fire.

In an unprecedented event, the UN Security Council issued a joint statement condemning without directly appointing Israel the attack against Qatar and reaffirming its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

The Council stressed that “the end of war and suffering in Gaza must continue to be our priority”, recognizing the vital role of Qatar, Egypt and the United States in diplomatic efforts.

A crisis that aggravates the international isolation of Israel

The signing of the settlement plan occurs in a context of growing diplomatic isolation for Israel, which adds international criticism for its policies in Gaza and in the occupied territories.

The plan presented and defended by Netanyahu is not only a violation of international law, but directly affects the physical viability of an independent Palestinian state, according to the demands of the UN and the international community.

Human Rights and the International Court of Justice have repeatedly urged Israel to stop their settlement activities and respect the rights of the Palestinian population.

Humanitarian impact and Palestinian response

The growth of Maale Adumim settlement, the largest in the West Bank, will further complicate the living conditions of the Palestinians and interrupt the north-south territorial connection of the Palestinian enclave.

The Palestinian authorities described the measure as a “murder” of all hope of peace, while the Hamas movement denounced that such aggressions “derail negotiation efforts.”

The Israeli offensive in Gaza and tensions in the West Bank have caused massive displacements and critical humanitarian conditions for the Palestinian population, who fight to survive under continuous blockages and confrontations.

Netanyahu keeps iron

Despite the international conviction, Netanyahu continues to defend its security and colonization policy. In response to criticism, the recent attacks in Qatar threatened actions against countries that support groups that consider terrorists.

“I tell Qatar and all the nations that house terrorists: or expel them or take them to justice. Because if they do not, we will do it,” he said.

In contrast, Qatar Prime Minister said Thursday before the United Nations Security Council that his country will continue with his “diplomatic” role as a mediator in negotiations to achieve a high fire in Gaza.

For his part, Fawzi Barhoum, one of the leaders of the Islamic Resistance Movement -Hamás- said in a televised speech that the intention of the attack in Qatar was not only to eliminate his negotiating delegation, but it was a deliberate blow to the entire process and a clear message of rejection of any agreement of high fire.
