MIAMI, United States. — Cuban scientists warned about the possible increase in electrical storms during the coming months towards the interior of the Island, reported this Friday the Cuban News Agency (ACN).
The forecast was issued by the Climate Surveillance Center in an update of its climate outlook for the August-October period, the rainiest of the year in Cuba.
The state entity warned that electrical discharges occur more frequently during the afternoon and early hours of the night and that they are associated with daytime heating.
Lightning strikes on the earth’s surface are common in tropical and subtropical areas of the planet, where the largest volumes of rain accumulate.
Specialists from the Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy consulted by the Cuban News Agency (ACN) point out that lightning is caused by the agglomeration of charges of various signs in the same cloud and that electrical discharges can occur between one cloud and another —the most dangerous because of its damage — and between a cloud and the earth’s surface.
The alert from the island’s scientists comes as a result of the catastrophe at the Matanzas Super Tanker Base, which ended with the destruction of four fuel depots.
Preliminary versions released by the island’s regime indicate that the incident would have originated in the impact of lightning on one of the fuel tanks.
Until yesterday, the sinister had left three dead (one firefighter and two Active Military Service recruits). There are also 14 missing persons, mostly firefighters and young recruits.
The catastrophe also left hundreds of injured, although most of them have already been discharged, according to official media on the island.
