The meetings that the federal government held with all sectors of Michoacán society, and that were the basis for the Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice, will continue to be held, in conjunction with the territorial presence that the agencies will have in the state’s municipalities, said yesterday the head of the Ministry of the Interior (SG), Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez.

In turn, Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla announced that the state will invest 2.7 billion pesos to accompany this plan, with actions aimed at security, youth, culture, tourism, health, support for the countryside and infrastructure.

During the presentation of the strategy at the National Palace, in an event led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, the head of SG highlighted that it was the president who ordered her cabinet to hold meetings with all sectors of the state’s society.

“Requests, concerns and demands” were presented that led to the plan announced yesterday.

He indicated that among the 12 axes of the project are actions in terms of security, economic development, infrastructure, social programs, education, health, housing, women, youth, culture and attention to indigenous peoples, and announced that starting next week there will be a territorial presence in the municipalities of Michoacán.

“Representatives of the federal government secretariats will visit house by house, municipality by municipality, to provide comprehensive care to the population with all government programs and services,” he noted.

Regarding the assassination of the municipal president of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, which has generated constant demonstrations in the entity, Ramírez Bedolla pointed out that in Michoacán “we continue to be dismayed, mourning, but working. This week’s protests are a legitimate cry of pain, but also a starting point. I have already said it and today I reiterate it: I am very sorry for the loss of a young, brave mayor determined to move his people forward.”

He said he was convinced that “we must put an end to this violence, but not with more violence. We are foolish in addressing the causes, in embracing young people and in fighting impunity so that there is peace and justice. Is there indignation? Yes, and it is totally valid, but I am sure that with you, President, with your commitment, intelligence and sensitivity, Michoacán will trust again.”

He recalled that his father was murdered in that same entity, so he emphasized that he knows what it means for a family to have a father orphaned due to violence. “Almost 40 years ago, in Uruapan itself, they murdered my father, a lawyer by profession and a rancher; and my brave mother, who was a dentist, helped us through. I understand more than you think the impact of violence and how difficult it is to be orphaned at 10 years old.”

The murder of Carlos Manzo, he added, “took me to my past, a past that many of us share, along with the eternal emptiness of those who remained. But over time it is not anger that calms the soul, it is learning to honor in life those who are no longer with us today.”

He defended that the security strategy “was working,” and expressed his confidence in the plan presented yesterday by the federal government. “The people of Michoacán feel protected by the solidarity of the president,” he stressed.
