The president of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), Ignacio Alonsosaid on Thursday that the relatives of the players involved in the fight after the semi-final loss against Colombia They are fine, but he said that last night “there were people who were left without air and in a state of shock.”
“The first thing to note is that everyone is fine. The doctor is giving us a report on the follow-up that was given by the health service. But there were people who did not fare so well, who were left breathless, in a state of shock, in momentary panic,” said Alonso in an interview published by the AUF.
At the end of the match at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, Darwin Núñez, Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez jumped into the stands and fought with some Colombian fans in a surreal pitched battle. Uruguay claims that the players’ reaction was caused by seeing that some Colombian fans were being aggressive towards their relatives.

Alonso said that Uruguay has “a battery of professionals to study the situation” at a legal level. “When the records are handled in legal terms, they expire. We would not be in that situation here. We will have to see the file when it arrives, see which players are being accused, which articles are being charged with the offence and then we will apply the legal strategy to avoid significant sanctions,” he said.
Uruguay is still in Charlotte, where it will play the final for third and fourth place against Canada on Saturday.
