The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reported this Monday that in the last week there were 8,957 new cases of coronavirus after having carried out 28,464 tests.
Last week more than 700 fewer cases had been registered than in this report (there were 8,216 new cases), but more deaths (10).
The weekly covid report shows that there were four deaths in the last seven days, between December 25 and 31. Since the pandemic began, 7,570 people have died from this cause.
Today 46.3% of ITC beds in Uruguay are occupied and 4.9% are due to coronavirus. This figure marks an increase in one week, since last Monday’s report this figure was at 1.7%.
Since March 13 of last year, 1,020,161 with a positive diagnosis of covid-19 were confirmed.
This increase in cases is due to the circulation of a new variant of omicron. Virologist Santiago Mirazo said last week that there is expected to be a “peak of infections” in mid-January.
The Ministry of Public Health urged the population to complete the vaccination schemes and anticipated the booster vaccination for the population over 50 years of age for December, starting, in a staggered manner, with the population over 80 years of age and the immunosuppressed.
