President Lacalle Pou referred to the process that led to the granting of a Uruguayan passport to drug trafficker Sebastián Marset and that facilitated his release in the United Arab Emirates.
“There was no other option than to give him the passport,” considered the president while defending the actions of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Interior, which were key for Marset to obtain the document while he was imprisoned in Dubai.
“It is not true that the government has lied or misrepresented the truth in Parliament,” added Lacalle, as raised by Senator Mario Bergara of the Broad Front, among others.
And about the chat between the Undersecretary of the Interior, Guillermo Maciel, and the Vice Chancellor, Carolina Ache, he said that they “met in the interpellation itself and later, because they let it be known” in the framework of the judicial investigation.
“Third, none of those chats have to do with the granting of a passport. It is information that was required by the Police ”, he indicated in line with the arguments that Interior and Ache have put forward.
The bench of legislators from Ciudadanos of the Colorado Party asked Vice Chancellor Ache for an urgent meeting, as a result of the events that became known this Monday.
