There is no fuel, but there are plenty of buses that need repairs

Havana/The Evelio Prieto Bus Production Company (Caisa) – the only bus assembler in Cuba – based in Guanajay, Artemisa, has proposed repair 100 buses destined for the capital before the end of 2026. This is stated this Wednesday in a report by Havana Tribune which reports that, of that total, 60 are already in the process of repair and eight of them in an “advanced phase.”

It is not mentioned at any time that the country is currently experiencing the biggest energy crisis in its history. Nor does anyone wonder how those buses will circulate if there is no fuel.

In a note published on November 21 by the same official newspaper, it was already warned that the constant blackouts were causing serious delays in fulfilling the company’s plans, despite having received a large amount of parts and materials donated by the Chinese Government.

Then – when the United States had not yet captured Nicolás Maduro nor had threatened to impose tariffs on the countries that sold crude oil to the Island – the workers could not complete their work day due to lack of energy. Currently, blackouts on the Island sometimes reach 20 hours a day, even in Havana, a region that traditionally had energy privileges over the rest of the country.

The reality is that, not only in Havana but throughout the Island, public transportation has practically disappeared.

The reality is that, not only in Havana but throughout the Island, public transportation is practically disappeared and private cars can charge close to 600 pesos per trip. Gasoline is sold in dollars and through a collapsed waiting list through the Ticket application.

The Minister of Transportation himself, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, who announced this Tuesday the launch of a fleet of 25 combustion buses and nine electric minibuses to guarantee the mobility of health personnel in the capital, recognized that the initiative would not cover all the demand of the sector, because part of its operation also depends on a fuel supply that cannot be guaranteed.

In the middle of all this panorama, the United States Government authorized the sale of fuel to the Cuban private sector this Tuesday, but it is still not clear how. this is going to happen for the population, given that the entire reception and storage infrastructure is in the hands of the State. According to the Treasury Department, the import permit is subject to the sale being intended for the Cuban people, and excludes entities linked to the regime.
