The second half of the year arrived with better expectations, not only for national production (which grew 2.5% in the first half), but also for economic sectors such as shopping malls.

Although malls did not have a good scene during the first months of the year, even despite the Mother’s Day campaign, they have already begun to take off. The general manager of the Association of Shopping Centers of Peru (Accep), José Antonio Contreras, explained that in June, July and August there was an increase in sales of between 8% and 10%, driven, among other things, by the release of compensation for time of service (CTS) and partial withdrawals of AFP funds.
This dynamism in that period will help sales in 2024 to increase by around 7% compared to 2023, when they reached S/33,000 million nationwide.
“In 2023, there were significant challenges for Peru, especially in the shopping center sector. Despite these challenges, the commitment to the satisfaction of our public allowed the sector to experience a 2% growth in its sales,” he said.
The growth of the sector not only benefits operators. According to Contreras, this progress translates into the creation of jobs for more than 174,000 people.
Meanwhile, the representative of Jockey Plaza, Juan José Calle, said that this year winter contributed to the better results of the sector and to the higher ticket prices for people.
He also pointed out that, as a brand, they recently inaugurated large Inditex group fairs and noted that they have incorporated around 60 brands that were not there, both in stores and in modules.

NEW SPACES
This increased dynamism also leads to the creation of new spaces. José Antonio Contreras explained that three shopping centres are expected to open their doors by the end of the year.
One of these malls is Parque La Molina (in Parque Arauco), a 16,000 square meter project, with an investment of S/224 million, which will open for the Christmas campaign.
In the last quarter, Power Center KM40 will also begin operations, with former soccer player Jefferson Farfán as one of its investors. The investment for this establishment exceeds S/55 million and will have a rentable area of approximately 10,000 square meters. The project seeks to attract people who live in surrounding areas of the south chico, such as Punta Hermosa, San Bartolo, Arica, Santa María, Pulpos, among others.
Punta Hermosa is also preparing to welcome the Puntamar Boulevard of the Algeciras Group in the first week of December, with an investment in this project of more than US$25 million. It will have Tottus as its anchor store.
However, one barrier that the sector faces is in the municipalities. José Antonio Contreras recalled that in 2023, closures were carried out in Lima and Trujillo, which affected sales. “This generated a negative impact on many entrepreneurs and families in the city. We were also affected last year by the increase in interest rates,” he added.

CELEBRATION
In order to boost the retail sector, Shopping Day will be held on the 28th and 29th of this month, during which more than 87 shopping centers will have offers of up to 70% and extended hours until 11 at night.
For this campaign, Accep estimates a growth in the flow of visits to malls of around 30%, driven mainly by the entertainment and gastronomy offering.
“We will have offers of up to 50% on electronics, as well as 2 for 1 on cinema tickets, in order to attract more visitors,” he said.
