According to the Peruvian Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia and Resuscitation (SPAAR), in 2023 there was a deficit of 3,215 anesthesiologists in the Junín region, an alarming figure that would put the health of the population at serious risk. According to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (2017), Junín has 1,246,038 inhabitants and only has about 78 anesthesiologists for its entire population, which is insufficient for the demand for operations.

“The parameters of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiology (WFSA) establish that for every 100 thousand inhabitants there should be 20 anesthesiologists. Let us remember that the anesthesiologist is the professional trained to give anesthesia to patients before a surgical intervention. In addition, they are trained to monitor the patient in post-anesthesia units,” they pointed out.
They added that the role of the anesthesiologist is essential in the operating room, as he or she is responsible for monitoring the patient’s vital signs before, during and after surgery.
