Just over three weeks to the regional and municipal elections of October 2, political parties and movements prepare their campaign closures. The regional prefect, Yeremy Torres, reported that so far received 10 requests for these partisan events.
Torres explained that, after the last communication with the central government, it was arranged that the holding of social and political events is made more flexible also due to the decrease in the fourth wave of COVID-19. This will imply that security guarantees are offered for the so-called campaign closing rallies.
According to the Organic Law of Elections, political meetings or demonstrations are prohibited 48 hours before the count. Thus, the last working day of the campaign will be Thursday, September 29.
Torres said that political organizations must present their request for guarantees up to seven days before of supporting events. However, in the event that it involves setting up a stage, they must also have permission from their respective municipality, which will issue their license based on the evaluation of different aspects, and based on consideration of Civil defense. It is forbidden for these events to close public roads and interrupt free traffic.
Torres estimates that In the following days, more of these requests will arrive for closing party events. He recalled that the guarantees of public order imply deriving police personnel to protect the safety of the attendees.
He also reported that this Monday the prefects will have a meeting with the National Election Jury (JNE), in which guidelines will be reported on how the movements should carry out the campaign, without risking the health of citizens, because there is still a pandemic context. Torres said that later they will meet with the different political organizations so that they sign an ethical pact to comply with the recommendations of the electoral entity.
