There are neither bicycles nor staff to distribute official newspapers in Cuba

Periódico Invasor

MEXICO CITY, Mexico.- For more than a year, subscribers to the official press in Ciego de Ávila have literally been waiting for the news. First they received the newspapers three or four days after its issuance. But in the last few months they just stopped receiving them.

The reason: the shortage of personnel and bicycles does not allow the company Post Office of Cuba distribute newspapers and weeklies in said territory.

“All of them are without tires, patched up, struck out, some even leave on foot, dragging the tires, and thus they cannot cover their area, imagine the others when there is a lack of personnel,” said Osmaida Valdés Ramírez, administrator of the Avilanian office to the Invader newspaper.

However, the official preferred not to delve into other details that the workers did expose to the media. They added that many currently pedal “on borrowed bikes,” “catching punch every day.” The arrangements, of course, are paid out of pocket.

Another problem that severely affects distribution is the scarcity of postmen, especially in the communities of La Victoria and Patria.

“First, we don’t have spare parts. No tires, for example. The company has tried to manage them, buy them, but the business group has not been able to import them. And, secondly, there is a deficit in the staff of postmen”, confirmed the deputy director of the Provincial Post Office of Ciego de Ávila, Yorleikys Gómez Arias.

Why are there no postmen?

Although the official sources consulted do not address the causes of the lack of personnel, the local weekly indicates that low wages and working conditions could be the answer.

“Carrying the press, social assistance, parcels, money orders, telegrams and, in addition, avoiding strikeouts and breaks every week is paid with less than 3,000 pesos a month,” Invasor details.
