In January of last year, a group of opposition legislators tried to promote the impeachment request after the imprisonment of the opposition leader Efraín Alegre, but in the face of the silence of Mario Abdo Benítez, President of the Republic, the ruling party did not support the request, remaining in nowhere.
Hugo Estigarribia, a constitutional lawyer, stated that there are more than enough reasons to prosecute and remove Sandra Quiñónez, State Attorney General.
“If she was not dismissed before, it was for the protection of the ruling party. The lady does not represent society. Now it’s a matter of numbers. But in the event that she is not prosecuted, she will be very weakened,” she stated.
The eight Llanista deputies of the Lower House will play a key role, since six votes are missing to finalize the dismissal. Legislators from the bench asked for time until Sunday to read and evaluate the accusatory libel. And that after that they will announce an official position.
“I believe that if they want to have a political future, many of these deputies should vote in favor. Now they have a conjunctural alliance with Cartes and if they vote against it, they will confirm that there is money running to avoid impeachment”, he commented.
POOR PERFORMANCES
Shirley Gómez, a political analyst, affirmed that Quiñónez’s dismissal is definitely in order. This is due to the poor actions that the Public Ministry displayed in several cases that became public due to their relevance.
“I think impeachment is possible. We are in a context where social pressure prevails. Something we didn’t have before. A context where the opposition and the ruling party are on the same line. They must take into account that the elections are close and it could take a toll on them, ”she commented.
NOT SUITABLE
Jorge Rolón Luna, former member of the Truth and Justice Commission, pointed out that the political power of the Colorado Party in Congress and in the Council of the Judiciary always ends up leading to the appointment of attorneys general who are unfit for the position.
“Totally mediocre and without any kind of track record. They are easy people to manipulate because they have to return the favor of having been appointed to a position that is too big for them. That’s how it’s almost always been,” she questioned.
Finally, he questioned the episode of torture in Ciudad del Este, which occurred two years ago by members of the Navy against 40 people.
“It is a shame where there is so much evidence, there is not a single accused. It is the example of how the Prosecutor’s Office is there to defend spurious interests and not punish flagrant violations of human rights », he concluded.
