The Government of Mexico announced this Tuesday the arrival, on October 13, of another 84 Cuban doctors as part of the contingent hired to reduce “the deficit of specialists.” With them, they add 436 health professionals distributed in several states, in remote or violent areas of the country.
With the new group of doctors, 68% of the 642 professionals that Andrés Manuel López Obrador agreed to hire with his counterpart Miguel Díaz-Canel, during his visit to the island in May 2022, will be reached.
During the president’s morning conferenceOn Tuesday, the director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Zoé Robledo, explained that there are currently 352 professionals hired through the Cuban Medical Specialist Program located in “hospitals with difficult coverage.”
“They have been, above all, regions and health jurisdictions that have high or very high levels of marginalization, or in hospitals where there was a vacancy for specialist doctors that had been going on for many years. There was a real veil, they did not want to see that there were no doctors in the different shifts,” justified Robledo.

These professionals have been located in 79 municipalities: 92 in Nayarit, 61 in Oaxaca, 55 in Colima, 54 in Campeche, 30 in Baja California Sur, 26 in Tlaxcala, 17 in Sonora, 10 in Zacatecas and 7 in Veracruz.
Without detailing the figure, the Cuban ambassador to Mexico, Marcos Rodríguez Costa, reported via Twitter that this Tuesday a new group of Cuban specialists arrived who “will support assistance in various states” of Mexico. “The humanist commitment of his profession at the service of a brother people,” the diplomat wrote in a tweet accompanied by a photograph with the toilets.
A report published at the end of august by the organization Prisoners Defenders (PD), entitled The military truth behind the Cuban medical missions in Mexico, revealed that none of the health workers sent in the last brigades to Mexico is really a specialist but rather a generalist, and that “all are military personnel.”
The organization assured that the health workers sent on the missions are “from Cuban Intelligence or G2, already introduced into the country through military airports, without the authorities, except for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his closest team, being able to know this fact”.
