The Interagency Coordination Platform for Refugees and Migrants from Venezuela (R4V), which works with various United Nations offices such as the UN Refugee Agencys (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), revealed that there are currently at least 6.8 million Venezuelan migrants in the world.
In its count, the R4V highlights that these 6.8 million Venezuelans left the country in the last four years. In 2018 there were 1.2 million Venezuelans Already cut off August 2022 there are 6.8 million Venezuelansthat is, the number of Venezuelans who have left the country has increased fivefold.
According to figures from the Platform, of the 6,805,209 Venezuelans abroad, 84% (about 5,745,664) are in Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently the reception of Venezuelans continues to be led by Colombia with 2.48 Venezuelans in the countryfollowed by Peru with 1.3 million and countries like Ecuador and Chile with almost a million migrants.
Both the R4V and the United Nations agencies highlight that in the first 5 months of 2022, Venezuelans increased their movement in the region through irregular routes before border closures and legal requirements to cross between borders. This situation calls for governments to adapt their response to migration to not put Venezuelans at risk.
