The term for the registration of the ministers who seek to occupy the presidency of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) ended at midnight on Monday. The sources consulted in various presentations confirmed that there will be five candidates and that they consider Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena as the candidate who has the support of the outgoing president, Arturo Zaldívar Lelo de Larrea.
During the first five days of the month of December prior to the conclusion of the office of the acting president, the ministers interested in replacing him will present to their colleagues the general lines according to which they would carry out said function.
indicates article 29 of the internal regulations of the highest court.
The applicants who presented their proposals would be Yasmín Esquivel Mossa, Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Javier Laynez Potisek, Alberto Pérez Dayán and Norma Lucía Piña Hernández, according to the sources consulted.
All of them submitted their proposals for general lines of work, printed and in PDF format, the latter with the aim of being able to publish them, simultaneously, on a microsite that will be available starting this Tuesday, on the website of the constitutional court. : www.scjn.gob.mx .
Since the beginning of this month, the ministers seeking the position have held meetings with their peers to convince them to give them their vote; however, none of the candidates has yet gathered the six votes he needs to win the election.
The applicants who agreed to give their point of view on the process assured that the negotiations are being held so far only between the 11 ministers, and that there are no external influences or pressures.
They agreed that Minister Gutiérrez is, among the candidates, the one who already has Zaldívar’s vote, so they considered that the approval or rejection of the outgoing president’s exercise will be a decisive factor in the election.
Voting will take place in the public session on January 2 and the winner is whoever obtains a simple majority.
