The president of LaLiga, Javier Tebasreiterated this Tuesday in Buenos Aires the interest of The league Spanish in which one of the matches of its competition is played in the United States in the 2025-2026 season, and did not rule out the possibility that a match of the tournament could be played in Argentina.
“It is a goal that we have been trying for a long time (…). Let’s see if (on this occasion) it is the definitive one,” said the leader of the Spanish League at the annual Sportel Rendez-vous event, which brings together federations, broadcast channels television and companies dedicated to sports production. The event, which is being held this year in the Argentine capital, has the participation of Agencia EFE as a collaborating media.
The league had already tried to have two matches of its competition played in the American city of Miami – Girona-FC Barcelona for the 2018-2019 seasonand the Villarreal-Atlético de Madrid of the 2019-2020 season -, in both cases without success and with the opposition of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the justice of the European country.
“The president of the RFEF has changed, fortunately for many, and FIFA (the regulations) have changed for that situation,” said Tebas, who was ironic about the criticism of the landing of the highest Spanish club competition on the American continent. . “It’s a game (…). We are not inventing anything, American sports like the NBA or the NFL play games in Europe and the strategy is not the same, but it is similar,” said the president of LaLiga. Tebas assured that the dispute of a match in Miami generates a “resonance effect” and causes the public that “does not know you, to know you more.”
He questioned the current leaders of the AFA
Regarding the possibility of two teams from the Spanish First Division competing in a match in Argentina, Tebas acknowledged that LaLiga “can imagine it,” but was very critical of the current board of the Argentine Football Association (AFA). “They would have to change their leaders. I don’t think they will collaborate much,” said the president, referring to the team of the president of the federation of the South American country, Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia.
