VILLA CLARA, Cuba. — Freddys Núñez Estenoz, director of the popular Camagüeyan group Teatro del Viento, has dedicated a publication on her personal Facebook account to refer to the constant emigration of Cubans, as a result of the world champion and Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo 2020, Yaime Perezdecided to stay in the United States after leaving the Island delegation that attended the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Núñez began by saying that one of the group’s actresses also said goodbye the night before “to the public, to the theater and to Cuba.” “Cuba is leaving us, slowly but steadily, soon, very soon we will be nothing, and we will have to adore past glories, which, over time, will be so distant that many may doubt if they were true.”
The playwright assured that he feels anger and impotence and that, at an official level, it seems that nothing is happening. “If they make any reference, it is to blame the athletes, to question the children of this land who choose to leave, those confused ones who leave after siren songs. I have come to believe that this is a macabre plan, where there is no chance.
He also indicated that each Cuban who leaves takes with them a piece of “our glory”, of “our island shame” and that they are considered “disposable material” or “radioactive substance”.
“No more speeches of culprits, no more speeches of justifications, no more speeches of resisting, resisting and resisting, no more trenches, no more extremes, I think we are not yet aware of the catastrophe, or perhaps we are, and look to the side and pretending that nothing happens has become the norm,” he said later.
“It is inappropriate to try to hold a present that is shattering against the pavement, and we all know it, even those in important positions who before the cameras and in public, exhibit their commitment and alone, or in small circles, recognize that something is wrong. it is dying, that something has died and it smells, it smells bad”, he pointed out to the artist.
At the same time, he said that it is urgent to rebuild the social fabric of the country, give value to what is essential, which is family, love, forgiveness, reconciliation and tolerance, and put aside “the damn business of hate.”
At this time, Teatro del Viento is premiering the play “Huevos”, by playwright Ulises Rodríguez Febles, at the Avellaneda Theater in this city, a new version that transmits pain, fury and desolation, as indicated by the director himself. The argument is based on the acts of repudiation that took place in the eighties in Cuba as a result of the Mariel exodus and that invites “not to forget”. “The walls are still stained, even if they are painted they are still stained,” reads one of the show’s lines.
In just one morning, more than 1,700 tickets were sold according to local media reports, a clear example of the wide popularity enjoyed by the group for its open, daring and at times satirical discourse.
Teatro del viento was founded in Camagüey on June 2, 1999 and has premiered quite controversial works with evident criticism towards the interior of Cuban society. On several occasions, Núñez has indicated that his staging is aimed at improving his country, at transforming his reality.
