Records of XM, operator of the National Interconnected System (SIN), and administrator of the Wholesale Energy Market (MEM), indicate that, as of March 16, the average water contributions of the dams of the hydroelectric park is 155.36%, index that has not been presented for nine years, precisely when the country suffered the climatic event.

For XM technicians, this phenomenon will help the country’s reservoirs to raise their level quickly, and these days it is exceeding 65% (average), after the first weeks of the year that were characterized by a moderate summer which led to the decrease in volume in these water bodies.

By energy source, at the end of February of this year, the hydroelectric plants with reservoirs were the largest contributors with 86.24%, equivalent to an average 138.40 gigawatt hours per day (GWh/d) (increasing 2.01% compared to the previous month), while run-of-the-river plants contributed 11.14 % equivalent to 17.87 GWh-day average with a decrease of 4.78% compared to the previous month.

(What’s more: Colombia already has a seed bank against climate change).
