The Instituto Libertad, historical center of studies of National Renewal (RN), published a report on political communication that produced worrying results for the Chilean right. The study indicated that, through social networks, the Republican Party, rather than responding to its natural political adversary – the ruling party – has dedicated itself to virtually attacking its closest political sector, Chile Vamos. “72.7% of the messages disseminated by Republicans in this period –September 4, 2022 to January 2023– were attacks against Chile Vamos and only 27.3% against the Government,” the document concludes.
After the block support given by the right to candidate José Antonio Kast, the relationship between Chile Vamos and the Republican Party has not been very harmonious. The first differences began to be clearly marked in the plebiscite campaign on September 4. Chile Vamos, on the one hand, promised that the Rejection was for “a new Constitution”, to return to sit down at the table and write a better draft of Constitution. The Republican Party, for its part, did not agree with this idea and postulated that it had to be rejected in order to maintain the 1980 Constitution, that a new constituent process should not be promoted.
Once the Agreement by Chile for the new Constitution began to be orchestrated, which enabled the process that is underway today, relations became tense. Especially from the Republican Party and this is confirmed by the study commissioned by the Instituto Libertad to the specialized Spanish company Atribus: “The campaign to attack Chile Vamos developed in connection with the Agreement for Chile, achieved a reach of 1.3 million users , with 81.7% domination on the network.”
Another event that evidenced the bad relationship between these two sectors was the constitutional accusation against the former Minister of Justice Marcela Ríos, for the case of pardons. In the prelude to the process, it was thought that with all the votes of the right there was a high probability that the former head of Justice would be accused. However, the impeachment filed by Chile Vamos failed because the Republican Party voted against it.
The justification, according to the community, was based on the fact that the accusation did not point to the real person responsible, who for them was President Gabriel Boric. The Republican deputy Benjamín Moreno said that “constitutionally accusing ex-minister Ríos does not do justice, does not revoke the pardons, nor does it mean that the terrorists of La Araucanía pay as they should pay”.
Some deputies from Chile Vamos, on the other hand, assured that the Republican Party would have taken the floor from them as “revenge”, for not having concurred with their votes to the constitutional accusation that said store presented against Minister Giorgio Jackson.
Even in a recent event, for the tax reform, the ruling party was heard saying that it was impossible for them to get votes in Chile Let’s go because said coalition was not willing for the Republican Party to capitalize on the image of the “only party that is in opposition to the Government “.
The senator and president of the UDI, Javier Macaya, was informed of the results of the study and, although he assumes that he does not see an adversary in the Republican Party, he regrets that “its political axis has been articulated, lately, more in attacking Chile Let’s go, in be adversaries of us”. The parliamentarian points out that “this has to do with a political objective of occupying an electoral niche and seeking to capture voters who may have previously voted for Chile Vamos.”
The universe of accounts analyzed included 387,872 users who generated conversations in sofficial media From Chile. The study, commissioned by the Instituto Libertad to the aforementioned specialized Spanish company, obtained findings that confirm the idea that the Republican Party’s social networks operate with the main objective of attacking the closest political sector.
The main leaders of the Republican Party would act in a homogeneous way in all their networks (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and TikTok). In this sense, the study indicates that the strategy is based on the matrix concept @laderechacobarde, “copied from the Spanish ultra-right VOX and used profusely by Republicans since 2019, directly seeking to discredit Chile. We go as a treasonous right, which yields to the left, which he negotiates with the communists, that he betrays the citizenry, that he is in the kitchen, etc.”
The report adds that “this communication design seeks to achieve a higher level of emotional effectiveness typical of populist discourses, it personalizes ‘evil’ in the main leaders of Chile We go, accusing them of being unpatriotic, country-sellers, thieves, cowards, etc.”
The deputy and general secretary of National Renovation, Diego Schalper, confesses that the results of the study caught his attention: “For us it was a surprise because, obviously, we expect to find tendencies to prioritize contingent issues, but no, we found ourselves with an organic effort to attack us, in which one out of every five accounts was paid and directed to attack, and I cannot use another verb: attack the leaders and the parties of Chile Vamos”.
The deputy distances himself from the way the members of the Republican Party proceed and warns that this way of acting and doing politics is not part of their political inventory and that alliances “consist in debating, they consist in confronting points of view, but in no case in trying to grow at the cost of gradually weakening the brand or the leadership of those who are ideologically close”. In addition, he describes as “quite reprehensible” the fact of making “a kind of orchestrated offensive, either against someone, even if that person thinks differently.”
the deputy Gloria Naveillán, who today is independent, but until a few months ago was a member of the party founded by José Antonio Kast, thinks that the actions of her ex-collectivity are not in line with what the public wants: “That a party is spending time to criticize his first cousin, I don’t think people see that well,” he said. This is because, according to Naveillán, “people are tired of the discussion about which party weighs more. People want solutions and that is built with dialogue”. The boredom of the people is reflected, points out Naveillán, in the poor evaluation that the population has of political parties.
Schalper called on the Republicans to provide explanations and also accused them of inconsistency: “Here there has to be a clarification, explanations. Obviously for us it is quite inconsistent to hear that, on the one hand, there are some who are the main opponents of the Government and, in parallel, their efforts in social networks are aimed at weakening those who are ideologically close”.
Deputy Schalper also adds that he does not want to believe that the communication strategy coming from the upper echelons of the Republican Party is being copied, but that it is “perhaps, from some dimension of its adherents.” However, he declares that he “worries him, because it is not the way to proceed for a serious and close party.”
After consulting with representatives of the Republican Party, they chose not to participate in the edition of this note.
