Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, in his speech during the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), addressed the political situation in Latin America. The Holy See pays special attention to what is happening in Nicaragua and expresses its great concern about the actions taken against the personnel and institutions of the Church, which directly impact the delicate issue of religious freedom.

In relation to Venezuela, the Vatican representative referred to the situation after the presidential elections of July 28, highlighting that “despite the multiple challenges they face, the Venezuelan people continue to trust in the democratic values established in the Constitution.” Cardinal Parolin stressed that “these democratic values are based on the sovereignty of the people, manifested through the exercise of the vote. In the midst of the serious crisis that followed the announcement of the results, we have seen several deaths, numerous arrests – including minors – and an excessive use of violence.

The Holy See is “deeply saddened and concerned” and calls on the country’s authorities and all those with responsibility for what happened to respect and protect the life, dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms of its citizens.
Furthermore, it urges to seek solutions to the current situation for the benefit of all, including the support of members of the international community willing to collaborate in a flexible and reasonable manner.
Within the framework of the UN General Assembly, held in New York, 31 countries debated the urgent situation in Venezuela and “reiterate our support for respect for democratic principles and the defense of human rights in the country, indicated in the statement on Thursday, September 26.
