The United States embassy in Managua announced on Sunday that whoever requests tourist or immigrant visas from Nicaragua must offer information about their social networks in the official form used for the process.
“All visa applicants who complete form DS-160 (visitor visas) or DS-260 (immigrant visas) must include information about their social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.),” the mission published. diplomat on his official Facebook account.
The US embassy added that “they will not request passwords, only usernames” on the forms.
“All forms must be filled out honestly and in full to avoid delays in your application process,” the mission insisted in the statement.
The publication has been shared more than 300 times and has already accumulated about 100 comments, most of them in accordance with the requirement.
“Excellent. This way they will be able to see what all the fans of the Ortega-Murillo government publish, who must be denied a visa for being repressors of political prisoners and exiles,” wrote Alexandra Laguna in response to the post on Facebook.
Laguna insisted that the embassy must review “the date that Facebook was created, because surely the fans of the government from today will be creating new accounts.”
Others took it as a joke, like José Orlando Gutiérrez, who asked a friend: “Juan, can you imagine yourself in the interview and the interviewer seeing your memes?”
The United States and the Government of Daniel Ortega are currently experiencing one of the worst moments in their relations. Ortega is a declared adversary of Washington and a strategic ally of Russia, a country he has supported after its invasion of Ukraine.
The tension increased at the end of last July when Managua withdrew the approval of President Joe Biden’s nominee for the new US ambassador, whom he accused of making “interfering and disrespectful” statements.
The current ambassador to Nicaragua, Kevin Sullivan, has been in office since 2018.
