Accompanied by Mexicans and Americans, Salazar took the opportunity to remember Joe Biden’s vision of his relationship with Mexico.
“There is a vision of dividing, of building walls, of seeing some people inferior to other people, that is not our vision. Our vision is to be partners, equals and make a family,” said the US ambassador.
The new diplomatic headquarters is built 63 years after the first United States Embassy, located on Paseo de la Reforma.
Where is it located?
It is located on Legaria Avenue, Irrigación neighborhood, in the Miguel Hidalgo mayor’s office. It is a few steps from the Soumaya museum.
The headquarters is built on the area that was occupied by a Colgate-Palmolive company factory.
It is a building made up of seven floors, including two underground levels.
Project Description
The new headquarters is by architects Tod Williams Billie Tsien and Davis Brody Bond.
The project has a size of 46,000 square meters and a budget of 943 million dollars is estimated for its construction.
The first stone was laid in 2018 with the then ambassador Roberta Jacobson and the head of Government, Miguel Ángel Mancera.
Work with national seal
The new embassy headquarters will have around 3,300 employees, of which 60% are Mexican.
Visa processing
One of the purposes of the new headquarters is to provide visitors with a good experience with the United States. For those who will carry out their procedure, there will be 81 consular windows. Applicants will be able to wait for their appointments in the plaza or in the rooms.
The building seeks to be environmentally friendly, which is why mechanisms have been included for the care and reuse of water.
The new headquarters will collect and store rainwater, and be connected to the local water system for building cooling, irrigation and toilet flushing.
It will also have solar panels, which can produce more than 10% of the building’s energy requirement.
To decorate the new headquarters, paintings, photographs, ceramics, textiles and sculptures are contemplated, created by American and Mexican artists, including Alyson Shotz, Tara Donovan, Linda Lopez, Christopher Adams and Omar Rodriguez-Graham.
When will it be ready?
The new headquarters is still under construction. Workers in charge of the project refine details and carry out cleaning tasks in the building. Its opening date is expected for the second half of 2025.
