The US will accelerate family reunification of Cubans and Haitians

MIAMI, United States.- The government of United States President Joe Biden announced this Friday that it will speed up the family reunification of Cuban and Haitian citizens, according to information from The New Herald.

According to the text, the measure announced by the US administration could seek to reduce the unprecedented numbers of Haitians and Cubans trying to reach the country by boat and through its land border.

That is why the government “announced the resumption of accelerated parole programs for the family reunification of Cubans and Haitians as part of a broader set of commitments in a regional migration association.”

According to the Herald, the announcement will be made late this Friday at the conclusion of the Ninth Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, California.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it would resume the program this summer. Last May, the state agency had already announced the restart of the Cuban Family Reunification Program.

“The DHS also announced that it will increase participation in the Parole Program for Family Reunification of Haiti beginning this fall,” reads the Herald note.

Both programs, for Cubans and Haitians, allow family members of US citizens and residents to bring their relatives faster than the regular process, making it possible for those people to wait for permanent residence in the United States.

The announcement made by the DHS this Friday takes place in the midst of an unprecedented migration crisis in recent decades, where both Cubans and Haitians seek to reach the United States by any means possible, even risking their lives at sea.

More than 115,000 Cubans have arrived in the United States in just seven months, between October and April, and it is already considered the largest exodus since 1980.

“Both Cubans and Haitians face a humanitarian crisis, and our policy is focused on empowering people to help them create a future free from repression and economic suffering,” the DHS said in a statement. release.

Expanding access to legal migration pathways offers migrants safe and orderly alternatives to irregular migration and its many dangers and indignities.
