Washington, Dec 14 (EFE).- USA warned this Wednesday that it will continue to expel migrants who cross the border with Mexico irregularly despite the lifting of Title 42, a health regulation used until now to expressly repatriate the undocumented.
The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkasexplained in a statement that after December 20 Title 42 will cease to apply, due to a judicial resolution, but assured that migrants will continue to be expelled under another policy known as Title 8.
“I would like to be clear about this: with or without Title 42, people who cannot establish a legal basis to remain in the United States will be expelled,” said the head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Title 8, which will be applied as of December 21, also contemplates “accelerated expulsion processes” and entails consequences such as “the re-entry ban for five years for people who are expelled,” added Mayorkas.
The head of immigration policy issued this warning because he believes that “smugglers will spread incorrect information to take advantage of vulnerable migrants” after the end of Title 42.
More than 1,500 people crossed the Rio Grande border last Monday night and turned themselves in to the US authorities in the city of El Paso (Texas).
Faced with criticism from local authorities, who feel neglected by the Joe Biden government, Mayorkas vindicated the “prudent planning and execution work” of the DHS on the border.
However, he admitted that the immigration staff “is managing a number (of migrants) that exceeds more than double” that for which it was established, and asked Congress for more resources to strengthen the immigration system.
A federal judge has ordered Title 42 to be lifted by December 21, established in 2020 by the Donald Trump Administration and also used by the Biden Government.
During fiscal year 2022 (from October 2021 to September 2022), US authorities made 2.7 million migrant arrests at the border with Mexico, a record number.
The Republicans have announced that they will try to impeach Mayorkas for his immigration management once they regain their majority in the Lower House starting in January
