The US specifies rules for humanitarian parole for Unaccompanied Minors

Parole humanitario, Cuba, Cubanos

MIAMI, United States. — The United States Embassy in Cuba reminded Cubans that minors who do not travel with their parents or legal guardians will not be eligible for the humanitarian parole.

In a statement published on social networks, the diplomatic headquarters offered information on the subject due to the numerous comments received.

“Given the impact that the Humanitarian Parole has had in Cuba and all the comments received on one of the most important issues: Unaccompanied Minors, in this post we provide safe and reliable information,” the Embassy said in its twitter account.

The US called on sponsors to take into account the rules provided for situations of this type, so that an application for humanitarian parole for a minor does not end up in a case of human trafficking.

“Minors under 18 years of age who are not traveling with their parents or legal guardians are not eligible for advance travel authorization or temporary stay permit under this process,” the diplomatic headquarters said.

The Embassy specified that “upon arrival of a minor who does not travel with his father, mother or legal guardian at a port of entry in the United States,” he “could be transferred to the custody of the Department of Health and Human Resources (HHS). , as required by law under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act 2008.”

The communication specifies that “the evidence accompanying the I-131 form must include the duration of the minor’s stay in the United States and evidence of the relationship between the minor and the parent or legal guardian in the country.”

“If the legal guardian provides written permission, the applicant must include proof of legal guardianship issued by a government authority. In addition, the application must include a statement about the relationship of the minor to the person filing the Form I-131, and whether you intend to provide care and custody of the minor in the United States, or reunite the minor with a parent or legal guardian. in the country”.

The humanitarian parole program for Cubans launched by the United States at the beginning of 2023 has been the great novelty of the migratory panorama between both countries. Through the new measure, thousands of Cubans have managed to arrive in the northern country in a legal, safe and orderly manner, while thousands of others await their moment to apply for the “benefit”.
