In his publication, Brian A. Nichols echoed the call issued by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, on December 10, International Human Rights Day, in solidarity with the political prisoners of the regime.
The release of Biden noted: “As we prepare to commemorate Human Rights Day this Saturday, December 10, I urge once again the release of the hundreds of political prisoners still detained in Cuba after the protests of July 11, 2021 In the face of oppression, these protesters had the courage to exercise their fundamental freedoms, including the rights to free expression and peaceful assembly. The United States accompanies the Cuban people in demanding their human rights and the right to influence the future of Cuba.”
This December 9, José Daniel Ferrer was beaten in the Mar Verde prison, Santiago de Cuba, during a visit from his children and wife Nelva Ortega.
“José Daniel manifested himself after demanding the return of the family letters that were stolen from Nelva last November 30. The head of the prison and other hit men from the dictatorship physically assaulted him and took him back to the punishment cell where they have kept him for almost 16 months,” he told CubaNet Ana Belkis Ferrer, activist and sister of the opponent.
José Daniel Ferrer has been deprived of his liberty since July 11, 2021. That day, the UNPACU leader and one of his sons were arrested when they tried to join the anti-government demonstrations that took place in their province during that historic day.
