116 years ago, Two of the most wanted bandits in the United States died in Bolivia in a long shootout with a military patrol at the mouth of a remote mine where they hid after committing a robbery. United States police officers, who at that time were called “sheriff,” participated in that operation. Yesterday, two officials from the northern country participated in the extradition operation of Maximiliano Dávila.

Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid They were those two men who ended their adventure in the first days of November 1908 in the San Vicente mine, in the south of Potosí.

Located in the middle of a sandy desert in which small streams break reddish slopes that will one day be canyons, San Vicente could be a place in the North American Wild Westif it weren’t for the llamas that graze around and because this place is 4,500 meters above sea level.

With the title “Scandalous assault”, the newspaper El Chorolque reported, on page 3 of the November 7, 1908 edition, about two Americans who had stolen the consignment of a mining company which was owned by Carlos Aramayo. It was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, according to the book Three Reasons to Die in Bolivia, written by Max Reynaga Farfán.

Reynaga’s text has private letters and financial statements of the Aramayo Francke Mining Company Ltd., telegrams and files from the investigating court that reveal a little more of this story.

Various studies They question whether both had died in Tupiza. One theory indicates that the bandits fled to Paris (France), where they were murdered by men of the mining businessman Carlos Víctor Aramayo. Another points out that Butch Cassidy fled to the United States and lived in anonymity. For his part, Reynaga shows documents that explain three reasons why they chose Bolivia as their last refuge.

Butch Cassidy was Robert LeRoy Parker, the oldest of 13 children, born on April 13, 1866 in Beaver, Utah, USA. While the Sundance Kid’s real name was Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, the youngest of five brothers, born in 1867 in Mont Clare, Pennsylvania, United States.

It is unknown how they arrived in Bolivian territory. The truth is that Sundance and Butch were hired at the Concordia mine, located in the Ichoa canton, La Paz province of Inquisivi.

In addition to his dark past, They were accused of being responsible for several robberies.so they emigrated again, this time to Tupiza, which at that time was a prosperous mining and commercial center.

According to the records, the sheriffs of the United States They were chasing the two bandits, who were previously in Argentina and Chile. It is said that they entered Bolivia after committing robberies in Chile and that they intended to be ranchers in the department of Santa Cruz.

On the afternoon of November 6, 1908, The outlaws arrived at the San Vicente minewhere a patrol of four soldiers happened to be passing through. A local man reported to the soldiers the arrival of two Americans with a mule from the Aramayo mine, which they had taken from its owners in the raid in which they had stolen the consignments of little economic value.
